Google to verify political ads in India ahead of 2019 polls

As India gears up for the Lok Sabha elections, Google on Tuesday announced an updated election ads that will provide comprehensive information about who is purchasing these on Google platforms and how much money is being spent.

The updated election ads policy will require advertisers to provide a "pre-certificate" issued by the Election Commision of India (ECI) or anyone authorised by the ECI, for each ad they wish to run.

Google said it will verify the identity of advertisers before their election ads run on its platforms.

The advertiser verification process will begin on February 14 and begin enforcing the policy from February 20.

The company would also introduce an India-specific "Political Advertising Transparency" report and searchable "Political Ads Library" in March.

"The ads that will be covered in the Political Advertising Transparency Report and Ads Library are ads for Lok Sabha Elections 2019 that feature a political party, political candidate or current member of the Lok Sabha, or any ads that are run by a political party, political candidate or current member of the Lok Sabha," Chetan Krishnaswamy, Director-Public Policy, Google India, told IANS.

In 2019, over 850 million Indians are expected to cast their vote to elect the country's next government.

"We're thinking hard about elections and how we continue to support democratic processes in India and around the world," Krishnaswamy said in a seperate statement.

For the elections, Google will make electoral information from the ECI and other authoritative sources easily discoverable on Search.

"We are bringing more transparency to election advertising online, and surfacing relevant information to help people better navigate the electoral process," Krishnaswamy added.

Google became the second tech giant after Facebook in December announced fresh steps to increase ad transparency and defend against foreign interference ahead of the 2019 polls.

Now anyone who wants to run an ad in India related to politics will need to first confirm their identity and location, and give more details about who placed the ad, the social networking giant said.

Facebook would also start to show a disclaimer on all political ads that provides more information about who's placing the ad, and an online searchable Ad Library for anyone to access.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in November said it is taking "multi-variable" steps, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, to curb the spread of misleading information on its platform ahead of general election.

Chennai-based Space Kidz India plans to build a satellite - Vikramsat - to do some biological experiment in space, said a top official.

She also said her dream of putting a satellite built by students will become a reality on January 24 night when an Indian rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will carry a small communication satellite Kalamsat.
"We are planning to build a satellite called Vikramsat to do some biological experiment in the space. By this we hope to contribute in a small way to India's ambitious human space mission Gaganyaan," Srimathy Kesan, Founder CEO of Space Kidz India, told IANS.

Speaking about the nano-satellite Kalamsat, she said it was a 10cm cube, 1.2 kg communication satellite with a life span of two months. The satellite cost was about Rs.12 lakh.

According to her, Kalamsat will be the first satellite of Space Kidz India to be in a proper orbit as its earlier satellites were suborbital ones.

Space Kidz India is working towards promoting art, science and culture for students of India, create an international platform for them.

India will open its 2019 space programme account on January 24 night by launching imaging satellite Microsat-R for the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and Kalamsat.

The satellites will be carried by a new variant of India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket.

"We will be launching 700-kg Microsat-R and Kalamsat with a new variant of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). In order to reduce the weight and increase the mass, an aluminum tank is used for the first time in the fourth stage," K. Sivan, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), told IANS.

The PSLV is a four-stage engine expendable rocket with alternating solid and liquid fuel.

In its normal configuration, the rocket will have six strap-on motors hugging the rocket's first stage.

However, the PSLV that would fly on January 24 with Microsat R and Kalamsat will be a two strap-on motors configuration and is designated as PSLV-DL.

The Indian space agency is planning to have the launch at about 11.40 p.m. on January 24.

The rocket PSLV-C44 is the first mission of PSLV-DL and is a new PSLV variant.

Kalamsat will be the first to use the rocket's fourth stage as an orbital platform. The fourth stage will be moved to higher circular orbit so as to establish an orbital platform for carrying out experiments.

Space Kidz India's Kesan is a happy woman as Kalamsat will be entering the history books on that account.

People know about you even if you aren't on Facebook "You Don't have Privacy in this social media World"

New York, Jan 22 (IANS) It does not matter if you are on Facebook or not - or have just deleted your social media presence. Your friends are constantly leaking your privacy to others, reveals a significant study.

The researchers from the University of Vermont in the US and University of Adelaide in Australia found that if a person leaves a social media platform -- or never joined -- the online posts and words of their friends still provide about 95 per cent of the "potential predictive accuracy", of a person's future activities -- even without any of that person's data.

"Privacy on social media is like second-hand smoke. It's controlled by the people around you," the researchers said in a paper published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour.

To reach this conclusion, the team of scientists gathered more than 30 million public posts on Twitter from 13,905 users.

With this data, they showed that information within the Twitter messages from eight or nine of a person's contacts make it possible to predict that person's later tweets as accurately as if they were looking directly at that person's own Twitter feed.

When you sign up for Facebook or another social media platform, "you think you're giving up your information, but you're giving up your friends' information too," said mathematician James Bagrow from the University of Vermont who led the research.

The research raises profound questions about the fundamental nature of privacy -- and how, in a highly networked society, a person's choices and identity are embedded in that network.

The findings showed that, at least in theory, a company, government or other actor can accurately profile a person - like political affiliation, favourite products, religious commitments -- from their friends, even if they've never been on social media or delete their account.

"There's no place to hide in a social network," said study co-author Lewis Mitchell.

How information moves on social media platforms, like Facebook and Twitter, has become a powerful factor in protest movements, national elections, and the rise and fall of commercial brands.

"Along the way, people on these platforms reveal massive amounts of information about themselves -- and their friends," said the researchers.

"You alone don't control your privacy on social media platforms," says professor Jim Bagrow from University of Vermont. "Your friends have a say too."

Facebook, Twitter face action over legal violations in Russia

Moscow, Jan 22 (IANS) Accusing Facebook and Twitter of defying the law of the land, the Russian government has opened legal proceedings against the social media giants for not complying to local data protection laws.

According to a report in RT.com late Monday, Roskomnadzor, the Russian censorship agency, said that Facebook and Twitter failed to comply with a law requiring all servers that store personal data to be located in the country.
"The tech giants instead handed 'formal answers' to the authorities' previous inquiries. The agency also pledged to take legal action against the internet companies," said the report.

Russian privacy laws require foreign online service providers to store users' personal data on servers located within the country.

"Facebook and Twitter are reportedly negotiating the issue with Russian authorities, as the companies have not yet moved their servers to Russia," added the report.

Roskomnadzor sent letters to Facebook and Twitter on December 17, giving them 30 days to provide "a legally valid response".

After no responses, the agency said that "Roskomnadzor begins administrative proceedings against both companies", reported The Wall Street Journal.

1st ODI: Kohli, Rahane lead India to victory

An unbeaten century from skipper Virat Kohli and steady batting by Ajinkya Rahane propelled India to a six-wicket victory in the first One-Day International against South Africa here on Thursday.

Chasing a target of 270 runs, the Indians crossed the line in 45.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the six-match series.

Kohli and Rahane came together after the early departure of openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to put together a stand of 189 runs.

Kohli scored 112 runs off 119 deliveries which included 10 hits to the fence while Rahane scored a steady 79 off 86 balls.

The duo batted the hosts out of the game and by the time Rahane was dismissed by South Africa pacer Andile Phehlukwayo in the 43rd over, the Indians were virtually assured of a comfortable victory.

The visitors had started their chase on a shaky note when an attempted slog by Rohit off Morne Morkel's bowling handed an easy catch to South Africa wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock.

Dhawan also went back to the pavilion soon after, caught short of his crease while attempting a quick single thanks to an excellent bit of fielding by Aiden Markram.

But if the Proteas had entertained visions of victory at that point, it was quickly extinguished by Kohli and Rahane.

Earlier, skipper Faf du Plessis' ninth ODI century helped South Africa recover from a minor collapse to post a competitive 269/8 against India in the opener of the six-match One-day International series at Kingsmead here on Thursday.

Coming in at number 3, du Plessis (120 off 112 balls; 4X11, 6X2) steered the South African ship with three vital half-century partnerships even as the Indian wrist spin duo of chinaman Kuldeep Yadav (3/34) and leggie Yuzvendra Chahal (2/45) shared five wickets between them to rip through the top order.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, South Africa got off to a patient 30-run start before Jasprit Bumrah's sharp inswinger trapped opener Hashim Amla (16 off 17 balls; 4X1) plumb in front.

Du Plessis rescued the hosts with a 53-run second wicket stand with stumper Quinton de Kock (34 off 49; 4X4) before Chahal and Kuldeep crippled the hosts with some excellent bowling.

The captain started well by punishing pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for three consecutive boundaries as the second wicket stand started flourishing to 83/1 until Chahal struck with the wicket of de Kock, trapped in front before jolting the hosts with the wicket of Aiden Markram (9 off 21), thanks to a brilliant running catch from Hardik Pandya.

Kuldeep then joined the party with the quick dismissals of Jean Paul Duminy (12 off 18) and David Miller (7 off 7) even as du Plessis looked comfortable driving Kuldeep for a couple of runs through extra cover to bring up his 30th ODI fifty.

Duminy found the going tough against the chinaman before a googly, which kept low, broke through his defences leaving the Proteas struggling at 122/4.

Miller, who walked in next, too struggled against the unorthodox Kuldeep and all he could manage was a drive to skipper Virat Kohli, who completed an excellent catch, diving forward at short cover.

Kohli, who had previously sustained a knock, had returned to the field after nursing the bruise and positioned himself closer to the batsman, which helped him complete Miller's catch cleanly.

Tottering at 134/5, the Proteas needed a big partnership to bail them out and all-rounder Chris Morris (37 off 43; 4X4, 6X1) provided the much-needed impetus to the innings by forging a 74-run sixth wicket stand in the company of his captain.

Morris looked in great nick throughout his knock, and even took Kuldeep to the cleaners once before being cleaned up two balls later.

Du Plessis, meanwhile survived a few close chances before reaching his century off a single from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and later in the company of Andile Phehlukwayo (27 not out off 33; 4X1, 6X1) raised a 56-run seventh wicket stand.

The skipper fell in the final over of the innings while attempting to take Bhuvneshwar to the cleaners and instead holed out to Hardik at the long-off boundary even as the incoming batsmen -- Kagiso Rabada (1) and Morne Morkel (0 not out) hardly disturbed the scorers.
